As a short girl at 5″2 I knew there were certain fashion trends I could never buy into; in particular the Midi Skirt. It’s very easy to look frumpy and almost hobbit like when a skirt hits the mid-calf, it makes you look even smaller and makes your body look overwhelmed by a skirt. But despite this, I had seen a few shorter gals sporting a midi skirt and looking fabulous whilst doing so; it gave me the inspiration to find out what was their secret in styling a midi skirt for us, petite girls so we could rock the trend as well.
I’ve listed three key tips in making the midi skirt work for you down below, so enjoy!
When selecting a Midi Skirt, find one with a length that is slightly above mid-calf. Petite girls will find that this slightly shorter version complements their shorter legs by not ending mid-calf which is the thickest part of your calf.
As for colour going for a nude or a colour that matches the rest of your outfit would be the best choice as to give the appearance of a longer body rather than chopping off part of the body.
Lastly, try selecting a lighter fabric that doesn’t add weight to your figure or pull you down – so no heavy and high volume skirts.
Tuck a shirt or top into your midi to add waist definition to avoid looking like a mass of fabric, because of this a crop top also works really well with a midi skirt.
Think about matching your top with your shoes with a different colour skirt in between. Your body will appear in one single colour with a break in between, but still elongating.
If you wear a bold colour pair it with a neutral blouse. As for a pleated or fuller skirt keep the top simple. I like to wear my midi with my Topshop White Sleeveless Top which has a few frills but is very neutral and simple.
Out of all the tips, this is definitely the most important., as with heels the whole outfit comes together and without them, I believe a Midi Skirt would be almost impossible to wear for petite girls.
Always Wear Heels.
Sadly short girls will struggle to not look drowned in a Midi Skirt without using a bit of heel to elongate their legs so they look taller.
Don’t go for strapped heels instead, go for maybe heeled sandals or a plain nude heel – this will give the illusion of longer legs/longer leg line and will avoid visually cutting off the bottom half of your body.
